Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd & Strawberry Alarm Clock Dead At 68

Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd & Strawberry Alarm Clock Dead At 68
King was with Skynyrd from 1972 to 1975 and again in 1987 until 1996. He was in the psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock who had the hit ‘Incense and Peppermints’ during the “Summer of Love” in 1967.

Guitarist Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd posted the following statement on his Facebook page. “I’ve just found out about Ed’s passing and I’m shocked and saddened, Ed was our brother, and a great songwriter and guitar player. I know he will be reunited with the rest of the boys in Rock and Roll Heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and his family.”

King actually met the boys in Lynyrd Skynyrd when they opened for Strawberry Alarm Clock in 1968 and he was joined them just 4-5 years later. King was on Skynyrd’s first three albums. He co-wrote “Poison Whiskey” with lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant on their debut ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd’ from August 1973. On their sophomore album king co-wrote ‘Workin’ for MCA,”Swamp Music’ and their most well know hit ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ King also co-wrote the very first tune on their third album, ‘Nuthin’ Fancy’ called ‘Saturday Night Special’ as well as ‘Railroad Song,’ and ‘Whiskey Rock-a-Roller.” By 1975 he had left the band so he was not on that horrific plane crash that killed guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie Gaines, singer Ronnie Van Zant and other members of the crew on October 20th 1977.

After a long hiatus Lynyrd Skynyrd got back together with Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny as lead singer and King was back in the fold along with Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle in 1987. King left again in 1996.

King was part of that three guitar sound that Skynyrd was so famous for. No cause of death was released yet but he had been battling lung cancer. – by John Beaudin

INTERVIEW: How Jim Messina Left Poco After Richie Furay Friction

INTERVIEW #4: How Jim Messina Left Poco After Richie Furay Friction. In some ways, in the beginning at least, Poco was a reaction to the ending of Buffalo Springfield. At the end the band had two member who would later be in CSNY Neil Young and Stephen Stills and two that would create Poco – Jim Messina and Richie Furay. We should mention Poco founding member had also been a guest on the last Buffalo Springfield album, “Last Time Around.” which was released in the summer of 1968. Messina produce the first two studio albums from Poco and their first live album. In this clip we talk about why Messina had to leave Poco, some friction with Furay and working in his replacement Paul Cotton.
Jim Messina has an amazing memory doesn’t he? He is doing shows this year right up to November. Go to Jim Messina.com for details. We’ll have more of our conversation with Jim in one week. – by John Beaudin

Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer Dead at 71: We Look Back

The keyboardist died of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Emerson’s longtime partner, Mari Kawaguchi, called police to his Santa Monica home on Friday, March 12th.

Growing up in Todmorden, Yorkshire in England he was a musical prodigy. In his early teens playing Jazz in London clubs. Emerson got his first touch of fame in the Progressive-rock band The Nice which was a melting pot of rock, jazz and classical music. Emerson, Lake and Palmer had all that and more. They took prog-rock to excess at times but it certainly caught on! The genre flourished in the 70’s and they were on of the biggest.

Three months before their debut album was even released ELP headlined the Isle of Wight Festival alongside Jim Hendrix, the Doors and the Who. It was their second gig.

Emerson showed his love for classical music right from the start. Their debut album opens with the Bartok inspired “The Barbarian” named after “Allegro barbaro.” The tune “Knife Edge” was cut from Bach and Janáček and it was the B-side to their first single “Lucky Man.”

In 1971 their live “Pictures at an Exhibition” album was mostly influenced by Russian composers Modest Mussorgsky’s 10 movement suite of the same name and Emerson was all over this album.

Some considered 1973’s “Brain Salad Surgery” their best work featuring the almost 30-minute “Karn Evil 9” with it’s carnival signature line “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.” The albums title came from a line in the 1973 Dr. John hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time.”

ELP’s Works volumes 1 and 2 really showcased a classical rock band. Volume 1 did much better than the second and reviews were mixed but anyone just calling this band Prog needs to listen to the pair.

Emerson Lake and Palmer had six platinum albums.

With his Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, and grand piano Emerson was a huge part of the groups sound. In fact was his 20-minute solos that irked Sex Pistols Johnny Rotten in the late seventies. The pair later became friends. Rotten who goes by Lydon told the News of the World, “He’s a great bloke, I’ve told Keith in no uncertain terms that what put me off his band were those 20-minute organ solos and that film of their convoy of trucks crossing America.”

ELP broke up in 1979, got back together 1991 and were on-and-off until 1998 then did a one-off show at the High Voltage Festival in London for their 40th Anniversary.

Former ELP bandmate Carl Palmer said, “Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come.””He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humor, compelling showmanship and dedication to his musical craft. I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did together.”

He was a rock star who didn’t listen to Rock., “At home, he either listened to either classical or jazz. We never listened to rock,” Kawaguchi said. “He hated being called rock star or prog-rock star…he wanted to be known as composer,”

Emerson also had over a half dozen solo albums and enjoyed scoring films. – by John Beaudin

Level 42 Co Founder Rowland Boon Gould Dead at 64

Level 42 Co-Founder Rowland (Boon) Gould Dead at 64
May 1, 2019 – He was a major part of Level 42 Until he and his brother left the band before their 1988 album “Staring at the Sun” and he still managed to co-write six tracks on that project. He would also go on to co-write every song off their 2006 album “Retroglide” with leader. Bassist and vocalist Mark King. King released a statement today saying that Boon was found dead in his home in Dorset, in the southwest of England.

The statement on the Level 42 website said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to tell you of the passing of our dear friend and brother Boon Gould. You are at peace now Boon, no more pain mate.”

His brother Phil, tweeted: “My heart is beyond broken. RIP Roland Charles ‘Boon’ Gould, my brother, 1955-2019.”

The Gould brothers and Mark King grew up on the Isle of Wight, and had played together from an early age. At times Boon had panic issues on stage and touring was too much.

He was certainly a brilliant guitarist and was a huge part of the success of Level 42 considering he was there for most of their heyday, 1985’s “World Machine” which was one of my top albums of that year. It would be their biggest album in the U.S. Peaking at #18 and it was the band first Top 10 album in the U.K. Peaking at #3. The album featured their biggest U.S. Hit, which Boon co-wrote, “Something About You” which reached # 7 on Billboard and #6 in the U.K. It also features the hit “Leaving Me Now. Boon would also co-write their biggest U.K. Hit “Lessons in Love” from 1986 and the album, ‘Running With the Family.” It peaked at #3.

It appears he died on April 30th. – by John Beaudin
